A 1970s home reimagined into a light-filled modern sanctuary.

Nestled in Brisbane’s leafy suburbs, Airy House by Sunday Society Interior Design Studio is a warm and functional family home transformed through considered design, natural light, and contemporary Australian styling.

This project began with a simple idea: to let the light in. By opening the floor plan, reconfiguring the kitchen layout, and introducing picture windows and Velux skylights, this once-dark home became a bright, spacious, and functional haven for a growing family.

Originally a maze of separate rooms, the house was redesigned to embrace open-plan living and flow. Automatic Velux skylights now flood the kitchen with natural light, while a large dining window connects the interiors to the outdoors — creating a sense of calm and balance throughout.

By relocating the dated laundry downstairs, we gained space for a powder room positioned near the bedrooms — a functional and beautiful addition. The design pairs crisp white tapware with Moroccan zellige tiles in Seafoam, blending coastal freshness with handcrafted texture.

The galley kitchen extends seamlessly into a butler’s-style preparation zone, ideal for concealed appliances and ample bench space. Fitted with luxury Gaggenau appliances, including integrated full-size fridge and freezer, the space is built for effortless everyday living.

Cork flooring was chosen as a practical and aesthetic solution — soft underfoot, acoustically gentle, and perfectly suited to a family home. The pale finish brings warmth while replacing the dark brown 70s carpet and lino, transforming the interior into an uplifting, light-filled environment.

To complete the design, the home was styled with GlobeWest furniture, enhancing its natural tones and contemporary coastal character. Each piece was carefully selected to elevate the overall aesthetic while maintaining a sense of ease and comfort.
